A dear friend of mine is battling breast cancer for the THIRD time. She is a fighter…. if she wasn’t, she wouldn’t be here today. Sadly, my friend only seems to receive bad news after bad news. She just learned she will need to continue chemo for the rest of her life (up from the original 18 weeks). When she tried to break from it for a week, the cancer very aggressively spread. She is also on a cardio toxic medication. And lastly, she was also just told she is anemic and has to take a shot for her anemia. As she put it, “it is one f#cked up thing after another”. I spent some time with her this weekend to try to lift her spirits. To my surprise, she looks great… like REALLY good; she had drawn in her eyebrows which framed her eyes very nicely. She told me she still wakes up to do her make up. “The day she stops caring about her appearance is the day she gives up,” she said. I find her to be so inspiring. I wasn’t sure what I would talk to her about, but I realized, she probably just needs a friend – someone distant from “oncology speak” and someone to just take a moment to have a girls day in with her to talk about “girl stuff”. I realized, she just needs a friend. She said most people in her life have become distant and she just misses company.
